Overview of Films and Activities

The Response Ability Children’s Services multi-media resource has been developed for use by Vocational Education and Training (VET) teachers who are delivering training to students enrolled in the:

  • Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care; or
  • Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.

This resource presents 6 films and more than 100 student activities to help students explore the social and emotional development and wellbeing of children from birth to school age, across a range of early childhood settings. 


Films and Activites

The films are designed to create opportunities for learning, rather than to depict best practice in all aspects of service provision.  The scenarios and comments presented are not intended to represent the experiences and views of all families or professionals.
The films were developed in authentic Australian early childhood settings and are constructed from a mix of documentary and fictional footage.  The accompanying activities pick up on themes raised directly or indirectly by the films and help students to explore these further, providing appropriate reference material.
Each student activity explores two key themes, and normally has at least two of the Response Ability Student Handouts in the reference list.  The handouts give students the key mental health information they need to complete the activity, but there may also be additional readings.
Some activities may raise issues that are potentially distressing for some students, such as child abuse, trauma or mental illness.  The resource includes a document, Discussing Sensitive Issues, for teachers and trainers that presents suggestions for setting safe boundaries when facilitating such discussions.
