Links to competencies

The Response Ability Vocational Education and Training Resource: Children’s Services (VET Children’s Services resource) has been developed for use by vocational education and training (VET) teachers who are delivering children’s services training.  Certain elements of the content can be linked to specific CHC08 competencies.

The Response Ability VET Children’s Services resource provides films and activities that can be used to support the delivery of children’s services training.  The content does not map specifically to a particular children’s services competency and is not accredited as a distinct course.  Rather, the material has links with elements of several competencies and can be used in a flexible way to support the delivery of relevant courses.

The material in the multi-media resource explores how children’s services staff can:

  • Promote children’s optimal social and emotional development to support mental health and wellbeing;
  • Contribute to the prevention of mental health problems and disorders in Australia; and
  • Support early intervention for children who experience emotional, behavioural or mental health difficulties.

These roles are integral to the professional practice of children’s services staff, rather than making up an extra area of responsibility, because they are consistent with existing principles of providing high quality early childhood services.  One can see similar principles reflected in the Council of Australian Governments’ early childhood policy agenda (e.g. in the National Quality Standard and the Early Years Learning Framework) and also in the children’s services competencies within the CHC08 training package.
Each student activity is linked with one or more of the children’s services competencies as specified in the CHC08 Community Services Training Package.  On Disc 1, under the section entitled ‘Links to Competencies’ you will find a series of tables that shows how the activities accompanying each film can be linked with selected competencies.
These competency tables are offered as a starting point to assist teachers in their planning.  As users become more familiar with the content and structure of the Response Ability resource, they will also identify their own ways of using this material and linking it with specific units of study.
